The melting watch is the most well-known and
beloved of Dalí's iconic images; the fluidity of time is
represented in this sculpture as time not only moving,
but dancing in rhythm to the beat of the universe.
Universal time knows no limits; it must be remembered
that time, as we understand it, is a human notion.
Instead, Dalínian time is perpetual and 'dances on' -
stopping for no man, history or even the cosmos. This
image is depicted in three different forms: Dance of
Time I, II and III.
These sculptures echo Dalí's famous 1931 painting 'The
Persistence of Memory' in which the famous melting
watch appeared for the first time. The draping of the
melting face dances in the wake of time. Dalí
became obsessed with the flow of time and used his
melting watch image in many of his works. The
unexpected softness of the watch represents the
psychological aspect whereby the speed of time,
whilst precise in its scientific use, can vary greatly in
human perception.
