In this sculpture the melting watch is draped against
and supported by the remains of a tree (the eternal
symbol of life) whose roots entwine a stone. The watch
is topped by a crown, usually noted merely to be a
mechanical device allowing us to set the hands and
wipe the timepiece; but time on a Dalínian watch has
no internal power or motion. With this in mind, Dalí has
chosen the crown of this timepiece to be a royal
crown in order to clearly identify its mastery over
human beings, rather than its utility. His majesty is
attended on one side by a pensive angel and on the
other by a woman draped in shawls. Once again Dalí
shows us that time reigns supreme over both art and
human reality.
